VHS & CRT Stuff

I bought this cheapo modulator that takes an HDMI input and it actually works really well. The image quality is great. The USB capture card, however, is pretty terrible. Almost all of these low-end USB capture devices have onboard MPEG2 compression. At one point, I had a similar device that output a raw signal, but unfortunately I no longer have it and I’m not sure if they are even still made. Just doing a quick search on Amazon and it doesn’t seem like there are many good options for analog capture at all. At least, it’s difficult to determine which devices compress the signal.

Here are two short test rips I did when I still had the old capture card:

capture1

Not wildly impressive or anything. In these examples, the video quality largely suffers from the compression I did before uploading (not to mention YouTube's own compression). I could be completely wrong, though, maybe my old capture card also did MPEG2 compression.

The following video was made using digital effects I found here.
